Protect Children Not Guns

“If more guns made us safer, we’d be the safest country on earth” Pete Buttigieg.

Look at all of the recent shootings this week alone: a teenage boy knocks on the wrong door, a woman turns her car around in the wrong driveway, too many mass shootings to list.

Better background checks and longer waiting periods, enforced gun safety classes with updates required, like driving tests for people over a certain age, NO assault private ownership of assault style weapons. They aren’t needed to shoot deer. If you arm a teacher in a classroom, they can’t draw it faster than someone armed with an assault style weapon.

If you live in a state where there ARE strict gun laws like NJ, your illegal guns and assault style weapons are from other states where gun laws are insignificant or almost non existent.

NO ONE is trying to prevent you from owning a gun or driving a car. Pass the tests and the timeframes, or get a medical clearance if necessary and buy your gun.

It’s the gun lobby donation millions to lawmakers, riling up fear and aggression in gun owners, and then arming them!  Prevent the gun manufacturers from selling military style arms to private citizens just so they can make more money.

Moms for America???

I received SC Congresswoman Nancy Mace's newsletter today. She reported on all of her meetings with different organizations.

Included was a note on her meeting with Moms for America. They honored her with an A rating and a spot on their Mom’s list.

As far as her A rating from Moms for America, well good for her for promoting White Nationalism, as the Moms "reclaim our culture" and stop "Critical Race Theory’s invasion in American classrooms."

I'm sure she knows that the only thing teachers have tried to do is update history and remove the white male lens from what was taught in the past.

I wrote to her and said that it's important that children learn about all aspects of our history, not just the good things that we did. Bringing the impact of blacks into that discussion doesn't just include the fact that a black man invented the cotton gin, leaving out the contribution of a woman and slaves who provided input to Eli Whitney. They should include other contribution by African Americans as well as the crimes committed against them by racists, such as hangings by KKK and the Tulsa Race Massacre.

If you read into the Mom's website it's a propaganda machine for Far Right Wing conspiracy theories, touting that the legal subpoena of Trump's residence to reclaim Government documents constitutes a war on all American Families, etc, etc!

I am a Mom and am a proud American. My father fought in 4 invasions in WWII and served 30+ years on the police force. I would never join a group with such a skewed view of the world! I ask Nancy Mace, "Where is your centrist view to appeal to the majority of your constituents?"

If she truly supports the sentiments of that organization then I give her a resounding F.

Letter to SC Congressman Joe Wilson

Representative Wilson:

I got your January 16, 2021 Newsletter. Your small gesture to help hand out bag lunches to those Capitol Police officers who risked their lives and safety to protect your very life was nice.

Joe Wilson 2nd from Left

You should now spend your energy on finding out why those in charge didn’t listen to the warnings available and weren’t prepared for Jan 6th!

You state "President Donald Trump has agreed to a peaceful transition of power and impeaching a president so close to a new administration impedes that process and only serves to further divide our country."

By not standing with fellow Republicans who voted to impeach Trump, YOU are helping to divide this country. You should support a Senate Trial and prevent such a person from ever seeking public office again. Instead, you tell your followers it’s not warranted.

You yelled out at President Obama on live TV that he lied over a technicality about the Affordable Care Act. He said illegal immigrants wouldn’t be covered by it, when there was an option for them to BUY and PAY for health care, as opposed to having free coverage.

Where were the Republicans, and you specifically, yelling "You Lie!" to President Trump as he spread Conspiracy Theories, said media reporting facts was “fake news”, called Neo Nazis good people, and told his followers that he won the election in a landslide?

He said he’s leaving the Whitehouse a week before Biden becomes President. It prevents him from having to be dragged out kicking and screaming like the out of control, spoiled child he’s been for 4 years.

He’s done everything to prevent a smooth transition of power. He won’t even do the civil and public transition of escorting Biden to the Inauguration and showing his public support for the new President. Obama did it for him.

His inflammatory rhetoric has been broadcast for over 4 years. He incited people to riot, breach the Capitol, beat and kill an Officer and others.

Where were you during the riot? How safe were you feeling? Were you cowering in a corner wondering if you’d be captured and hung? Did you know your office wasn’t a target?

Yet you continue to support and allow such actions by a President.

Timothy McVeigh blowing up the Federal building didn’t scare you? The killing of people in their churches and synagogues by Domestic terrorists didn’t scare you? Attacks and the killing of public officials around the world by right-wing extremists didn’t scare you?

None of those things or the actions of Trump didn’t scare you into standing up for our Democracy? Yet a person living in the US, who is not a citizen, but is willing to pay for their healthcare scared you.

It’s obvious to me whose side you are on and what “type” of person you are against.

You’ll make a scene and call out a Black man on a technicality, but allow a rich White guy to foment hate, violence and continue to spread outrageous lies, even after he leaves office, just to preserve your way of life.

A peace offering of a bag lunch makes it all right if done in front of a camera. Right?

Break the Cycle of Misinformation and Conspiracy Theories

We have a huge problem to solve as a country. We need to come together as a nation of US citizens for the good of our Nation and to maintain our Democracy.

It’s not only Proud Boys, Neo Nazi’s and Militia. There have been angry group demonstration at State Government buildings with some attempts to break in. The potential is there for riots similar to what we just witnessed at the Capitol Building.

Trump’s been banned from Twitter a little late. He’s already called his people to arms for the Inauguration. DC will be better prepared. However, do we really need to see riot gear, armed mobs fighting with Police and National Guard? Especially on a day where the whole world will be watching just to see what this once proud country has become?

The only solution I see is to somehow break the barrier of misinformation stoked by Trump and radical or far right conservative media outlets.

You all have friends and neighbors who absolutely, 100% agree that anything reported on Network or Cable news is fake. They’ve been told that over and over again and repetition has sunk into their brain like the times tables many of us had to memorize as children.

People from all walks of life and all levels of education are true believers in QAnon, like the Airforce Vet who was killed while storming the Capital. Her Twitter feed declared her intentions to support a Coup.

Members of the Press can’t wear their logos identifying them as such and must take security with them when they cover events. They’re heckled and their equipment’s been destroyed by those who don’t want them to report their “fake news.”

I don’t know how to get to these disillusioned individuals, but maybe, just maybe, we can break through to them. Right now, people are feeling a little more vulnerable since the violent mob desecrated the People’s House and could have killed our elected officials. They already set up nooses outside for public hangings. Maybe some of few followers are a little awakened to who they’ve been listening to and finally question his beliefs.

We have to continue dialog with those lost in conspiracy theories and misinformation. Somehow, if we stop just talking only amongst those that agree with us, maybe enough of us can get a few of them to understand who the Groups are behind all of their misinformation. Maybe we even change the channel sometime and listen to what they’re hearing or reading.

Social Media has to be more vigilant. The accounts of those circulating these violent messages and hashtags stating their intentions for violence to take over the government should be suspended.

At a minimum, any extremists on the right or left who are advertising their intentions to cause harm should be reported to Authorities.

Right now it’s up to us. We as US Citizens must try our best to dialog with other US Citizens, regardless of any political affiliation and try to speak truth to them.

It’s not a time for funny memes, name calling or dismissing those we don’t agree with. You just might break through to 1 person. If enough people break through to 1 person, maybe things will start to get better.

On the other hand, maybe you’ll just out someone who’s truly racist and has gone down that rabbit hole of idolizing Trump and believing conspiracy theories, so they don’t have to admit to themselves what’s driving them.

Riots Inside The People's House - A Day That Will Live In Infamy

I've been so upset for so long by the divisive and inflammatory rhetoric of our President and by his actions. It upsets me so that he has actually convinced so many people that any news not presented by him or alternative media is Fake. Actual facts no longer matter to so many people.

The underlying and often overt racism of so many, so afraid of change to their status quo is appalling.

Yesterday I hit a wall and am beyond upset but am now afraid. I'm afraid for our Democracy. I'm afraid of what could happen in the next 10 days and after that for the safety of our new President and Vice President. I'm afraid for people of color. I'm afraid that we won't be able to speak civilly to friends and neighbors who may think about things differently from ourselves.

I've tried to have open and honest dialogue with those I don't agree with on politics. If I state facts or look up information they've sent or provided facts regarding misinformation they've sent, I'm told I'm lecturing and shouldn't have to check their information for accuracy. I've been dismissed in discussions with others as citing fake news on everything from what the President said to my quoting National Geographic stating there's no proof that Covid 19 was manufactured in China.

As I get older I get weepy more easily. Today I spoke to 2 different Customer Service Agents from 2 different companies regarding different matters. I found myself tearing up as I started to say goodbye to the first. We ended up continuing the conversation.

This young black woman agreed with my concern She told me several friends texted her yesterday saying if that were a Black Lives Matter Protest (see photo below), the preparation and handling of the crowd would have been different. Like me, she was glued to the TV and stayed up until the early hours of the morning watching events unfold. She too turned on the TV again this morning to check to see if it was just a bad dream.

We talked through the events and gave each other a chance to vent our feelings a little to someone outside of our bubble of conversation. We agreed that yesterday was not a protest. It was a planned show of force by a mob of rioters intent on harm. They came in from around the county and were egged on by a 90 min in-person speech, not a tweet, by our President. They came prepared with their own helmets vests and riot gear and there was no show of force to protect the Capitol Building and the people discussing our democratic process inside. I finally said goodbye and told her to take care of herself and to be careful in the days to come.

I later had the good fortune to speak to a Supervisor in another company about an issue that has taken me weeks to try to resolve. Once again, I found myself starting to tear up and had trouble speaking at first. I apologized and told him that I've just been so upset by recent events and this unresolved issue didn't help my state of mind.

This African American man calmed me down and told me it was going to be OK, we were going to be OK. He helped resolve my issue and left me with these words "One thing I know for sure and one thing I know for certain, We are a Great Nation and We Shall Overcome".

May God or whomever you look to in time of need, protect us, and may he bless this Country.

Uproar over Pope France comments on Gay Civil Unions

I’ve received a flurry of emails from my more conservatives Catholic friends regarding Pope Francis’ comments in an interview about gay Civil Unions. The wailing and nashing of teeth by those trying to assure each other that this is NOT Catholic Doctrine! The Pope is NOT infallible. Gays are NOT  allowed to be married in our Church, the Pope is a little careless in his choice of words, etc. etc.

I guess I made the mistake of responding to one validating that these were just comments the Pope made in an interview trying to open up discussion. I added the fact that when I was in Catholic school 100 years ago, we were taught that the Pope was infallible. I sent along a link to a history of the few times the Pope’s declaration have been deemed infallible.  My email either want clear that I agreed with the sender and my fact based links were not read so I got more responses of assurance sent to me.

Once again, I was forwarded an email sent to a congregation by a priest assuring his flock that “It ain’t true!”

So, fool that I am, I responded with three following:

This agrees with what we both said. The Pope’s comments are just that, comments. They’re not set in stone as Church doctrine. As mentioned, he is starting a discussion about inclusivity just by talking about gay Civil Unions.

Interesting though that Fr. Gregg soothes folks about the opinions of one Pope, with those of another made in 1975! The footnotes are from Bishops Conferences, etc. in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s.

Surely the world has changed since then, and continues to change?  Surely discussion about concepts are allowed to take place without misinterpretation of fact or fear of change? Hopefully, we learn and grow with it along with our understanding of others unlike ourselves. What was once a very insular church has slowly continued to change, as it has throughout the centuries. Thank goodness we no longer send out armed soldiers on Crusades or hold Inquisitions to persecute Jews and Muslims, or in more recent times, the Irish persecuting and mistrusting Italian immigrants who came here after them, and not tolerating their Churches or Church traditions surrounding celebrating feasts of Saints.

I find it curious that so many people are already up in arms even about the concept of civil Unions of gays in 2020. In a time when it’s so important for us to at least try to understand all of our differences, folks want to retreat into their comfortable shells.

No discussion, just send out a flurry of emails assuring each other it’s not true, not happening, not allowed, instead of “Why did Pope Frances make the comment? What was the context of the remark? Why would a gay person want to be married in a civil union? Could I ever accept that notion if the church did condone it? How do I feel about interracial marriage? How would I feel if a gay person, or gay couple, a Trans person, or a black family moved next door to me?”

People were very upset after the Second Vatican Council under John XXIII. You were too young at the time to remember the full impact, but trying to drag people into the modern world was a life changing event and a lot of people came along kicking and screaming!

Switching from a Latin Mass to English or in language was HUGE, along with turning the altars around so the priest faced the congregation, stopping the use of very ornate robes and trappings, bringing in non traditional music, guitars and so many other changes, physical and mental.

Change is hard. Moving away from what is comforting and familiar is hard. Accepting new ideas is hard.

I hope to always be able to keep an open mind no matter how old or set in my ways I become.

Subject: Fr. Gregg's Response to Recent News about Pope Francis

Dear OLV Family,

This week a documentary was released that contains quotes from Pope Francis that make it sound like he is promoting Same-Sex Civil Unions, which would be contrary to Official Church Teaching.

Whether this segment was edited intentionally to mislead people (see article here *) or whether he said them and meant them, a Pope's comments in an interview do NOT equal Official Church Teaching.  Just like a Pope's comments at a cocktail party do not equal Official Church Teaching.  So, no, the teachings of the Church have not changed at all.

Because these confusing statements from the film have circulated around the world, Pope Francis should issue a statement of clarity for the sake of the faithful.  If he does not, it would be a grave sin of omission and negligent of his Office.

To learn the Church's Official Teaching on this issue please read the short document from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Fatih, promulgated by St. John Paul II,

Here is a quote from paragraph 11, Conclusion:
"The Church teaches that respect for homosexual persons cannot lead in any way to approval of homosexual behavior or to legal recognition of homosexual unions."

Forgive the brevity of this response, I hope to address this topic more fully soon.

In Christ,
Fr. Gregg
* the linked article does not mean that I support the author, website, or even all the statements from the article, it is simply one example to show that the Pope's statements came from a longer conversation and that YouTube has removed the original interview so that it cannot be viewed in United States.

COVID-19 Punishment from God or a Call to Live Differently?

I told my husband yesterday COVID 19 is God’s Plague of Pestilence on us for all of the nasty, hate filled stuff that’s been going on the past few years.

All of the lies and discrimination are now catching up with us.

Pope Francis says “It is a time to decide to live differently, live better, love more and care for others”

Impeachment Hearings

My response to a letter received from Senator Tim Scott of SC:

(I wrote to him and my other Washington Representatives previously, urging them to listen to the facts presented at the Impeachment Hearings, to remember their oath of office to uphold the Constitution and not to vote just along party lines.)

Dear Senator Scott:
I agree with most of your comment that “It is imperative that the U.S. Congress not allow the Democrats or the media to taint the integrity of this investigation or Administration without due process. Impeachment is an action that should be undertaken with somber thought and responsibility. Unfortunately, it seems instead as though this inquiry is being used as a political tool by some of those in the House of Representatives.”

I have watched ALL of the hearings from every Committee, and seen all of the testimony. My observation is that the Democrats and patriotic witnesses all comported themselves in a measured and professional manner, stating all the facts that were available to them.

The Republicans however, often yelled loudly about many things, but often avoided direct questions, did not present cogent arguments in defense of the facts nor did they question why President Trump blocked testimony of potential witnesses and refused to turn over Any documentation to the committee except the transcript and the Whistleblower complaint.

Demanding to hear from the Whistleblower just puts that person in more danger and threatens all future whistleblowers. As it is, I believe that the Republicans have leaked that person’s identity which, I’m told has been circulated on Social Media.

Unlike the Nixon impeach hearings, which I am old enough to remember, they are acting in a totally partisan manner and have not given their oath of office to the Constitution any consideration.

Turning over all matters to the courts negates the power of Congress. I have said to my husband for over a year now that Trump is on the road to a Dictatorship. Now you and your colleagues will allow that to happen if you continue with your current path.

The Republicans have turned the impeachment process into a 3 ring circus, with Trump in the Center Ring, Putin taking a bow in the Second Ring and the Republican Committee members streaming in and out of a clown car in the Third Ring.

You are making it harder and harder for me to continue to state that I am an Independent voter.

Prejudice 2.0

Lest we forget “Among those who despised them the most were the second-generation Irish, whose fathers had been guilty of the same crimes. Irish kids pulled the beards of old Jews and knocked them down. They upended the pushcarts of Italian peddlers.” E.L. Doctorow writing about immigrants from Western and Eastern Europe circa 1905.

People are always afraid of those different from themselves. That fear grows into an ingrained prejudice passed on to other generation until someone is smart enough to recognize that fear and prejudice of perceived differences is ignorant.

Embrace those differences. Do you eat spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, croissants, curry dishes, Collard greens, Chinese food, guacamole, burritos, tortillas? All American foods or do you actually like something from other cultures? There are people and cultures associated with those foods. It’s not just about the food.

Like generations before, all ethnicities experienced and still do experience prejudices. I remember what it was like growing up different from my peers. Sometimes it’s words, all too often it becomes threats that incite violence. Just ask the Native Americans of their treatment over the years.

It has been made very obvious these past 2+ years that it has become socially acceptable to show prejudice with pride, because after all White Nationalists, aka Nazis, are good people too.

America is the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave, E Pluribus Unum (out of many, one: the motto of the United States). You are a good American as long as you can hide behind Social Media or the President. Allow yourself to believe the lies told by Fox Opinion hosts and conservative newsletters and websites, go to Church on Sunday to show the world what a good person you are on the outside. As the catch phrase of the 30’s and 40’s put it, you’re “Free, white and 21.”

The Media Master had them chanting “Lock her up” long after the election and far into his Presidency. He needed a new catch phrase and ignorantly told people who were born here to go back where they came from!

It really saddens me to hear chants of “Send her back”, with a 13 second pause to let it sink in and make sure it sticks. Check into your own ethnic background and history. It wasn’t  that long ago when your parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc. heard those same words.

There is NO path to make America great without being better together.

Facebook Commentary by Cindy Morrisroe Mirabella:

There is NO path to make America great without being better together.

Thoughtful opinion pieces like the one below are integral to the process of understanding each other. Many of my friends are sharing valuable opinions and 3rd party opinion pieces that are constructive and positive.

In CONTRAST to the useful opinion piece below, please realize that the faux news sites (those that present opinions as fact) will continue heading further right and further left with clickbait titles and garbage presented as data in order to manufacture outrage. Outrage --> clicks --> shares --> views --> ad revenue. Outrage --> revenue (get it?). These sites have had months of year over year growth and they're not going to give it up easily just because the election is over, so they're going to work really hard at getting us lathered up enough to do their ad sales for them by sharing their clickbait (exaggerated airquotes) content (end exaggerated airquotes).

Don't be manipulated so easily. Be better than that. Check before you post crap positioned as fact. You have a brain. You have the Internet. Use them both. And throw the yellow card (politely) when you see a fellow American not using their brain and/or the Internet but posting crap positioned as fact. Do that especially when you kind-of, sort-of like where a faulty conclusion is headed - that takes REAL effort. We are all entitled to our own opinions (and to share them), but NOT to our own facts. If the producers of crap content can't use us as a free sales force, they will eventually no longer be able to afford the costs to manufacture it.

Facebook Commentary by Linda Vola:
A good read. If you want change. It's time to start writing to those in DC and State gov. Get ready for the next elections in 2 yrs!

Don't Panic

Don't panic. Or rather, don't keep panicking for too long.
We tend to have a fairly left-leaning readership here at Cracked, just for demographic reasons (lots of college kids and such). So a lot of you reading this are outraged, sad, disgusted, terrified, and/or physically ill right now. Lots of you also use the stuff I write to feel better about the world, so let me give it my best shot.
First, understand that the opposite of panic is not blithe acceptance of the situation -- it's clear-minded, positive, day-to-day action. Panic makes you do stupid shit or, even worse, curl up into a ball and do nothing. Don't tell me you have reason to panic. You never have reason to panic. You have reason to act.
So yeah, be upset for as long as you want. Get drunk. Do whatever you have to do. After that, I want you to sober up, splash water on your face, and consider some facts:
Gay marriage has overwhelming support nationwide -- 55 percent to 37 percent against.
The vast majority of the population supports background checks for gun buyers -- up to 90 percent in some polls.
A majority of Americans support some kind of universal health care, 58 percent to 37 percent.
And -- get this -- Americans overwhelmingly agree that immigration helps the country more than it hurts, by a 59 percent to 33 percent margin.
Okay?
Your country didn't go anywhere. It's right here where you left it. America is nothing more than a big ol' collection of people, and those people are more diverse and progressive than they have ever been. That train won't be stopped. Donald Trump's supporters are by and large an aging and shrinking demographic. We didn't see the backlash coming, but that's on us -- a look at our history would have taught us to expect it.
In light of that, there are a few things to understand going forward.
1. You still have tremendous power, if you are willing to exercise it.
If Trump strides into office and decides he wants to undo 50 years of social progress, he will hear about it from a majority who disagrees, many of whom do in fact have quite a bit of influence. So will the members of Congress, who have to sign off on whatever he wants to pass. Trump was elected for a bunch of different reasons that may never be replicated, but that doesn't change the fact that most of the country is still on your side.
Midterm elections are just two years away. Someone who needs your assistance because they're suffering under Trump's policies is probably much closer. Unite. Act.
2. Half of America did not, in fact, just reveal themselves to be closet Nazis.
My family back home aren't Nazis. Neither are their neighbors. This is the last thing many of you want to hear at the moment, and that's fine -- feel free to bookmark this and read it a few months from now. But you can see the numbers for yourself, if you go issue by issue. Shit, at least three Trump states just voted to legalize marijuana, maybe more by time you read this. This is not your grandfather's GOP. This is something different.
The truth is, most of Trump's voters voted for him despite the fact that he said/believes awful things, not because of it. That in no way excuses it, but I have to admit I've spent eight years quietly tuning out news stories about drone strikes blowing up weddings in Afghanistan. I still couldn't point to Yemen on a map. We form blind spots for our side, because there's something larger at stake. In their case, it's a belief that the system is fundamentally broken and that Hillary Clinton would have been more of the same. Trump rode a wave of support from people who've spent the last eight years watching terrifying nightly news reports about ISIS and mass shootings and riots. They look out their front door and see painkiller addicts and closed factories. They believe that nobody in Washington gives a shit about them, mainly because that's 100-percent correct.
That pressure was building and building all around us, and we kept ignoring it. We media types were baffled when Trump won his first primary, and then his second, and then his third. We desperately tried to figure out how the system had failed. We were bemused when he won the nomination, then when he continued to hang around in the polls, we had approximately the same reaction one would have to seeing an invisible dagger floating across the room, aimed right at our fucking face. "How is this happening?!?"
Stop being baffled. Understand why it happened. Do the opposite of panic. Work through the problem.
3. The internet lets us live in social bubbles that blind us to what's really happening.
"How can he keep winning when 100 percent of the comedians and smart commentators have nothing but derision for him? How can he keep finding voters when everyone on my Twitter feed thinks he's a monster?" Well, we can stop being confused. That invisible hand on the dagger belonged to a forgotten entity called "Most of America."
That sick feeling some of you have right now? They've had that for the last eight years. Call them racists, if you want -- some of them definitely are -- but mostly they're regular people who want jobs, security, and safety. Part of that bubble effect is that we're often shielded from "the other side" just enough that only the loudest, craziest assholes leak through. Some of you never had a single polite conversation with a Trump supporter, but did hear about hate crimes and the baffling Reddit spammers and Breitbart bigots. You didn't think Trump would win because you didn't think half the country could be crazy assholes.
Well, I've got good news: You were right. If you focus on the racism and ignore the economic anxiety, you're intentionally blinding yourself to much of the problem. It doesn't matter how much you hate them; their concerns must be heard and addressed or else this will happen again. Or, as someone on Twitter put it, "I'm begging liberal Democrats to discover a tactic other than wealthy celebrities mugging in a camera about how dumb the GOP is."
They don't need your sympathy, they don't need your thinkpieces. They need fucking jobs. They need to feel like they're not getting left behind and they need to not actually get left behind. The system needs to change, and only one candidate promised them it would. If he fails, they'll turn against him too. Watch.
4. What Trump's supporters just did, you can do.
Bad things are absolutely going to happen over the next few years. There will be outrages and disasters. That means people will need your help and you do not have the option of sitting it out. Just know that none of this is unprecedented -- you're just seeing it for the first time, many of you too young to have been paying attention pre-Obama. The old guys who wept with joy when Obama took office did it because they knew that getting there had been a long, brutal road, full of pitfalls and harrowing detours around mountains of bullshit. They saw the Civil Rights Movement bloom in the 1960s, only to run smack into the Reagan years. They pressed on and saw the tide turn.
But only because they acted. In each gut-wrenching setback, they saw opportunity.
And there is opportunity here. You'll see. Trump ran against the most well-funded, well-organized political machine in the history of national politics, with 90 percent of the media and celebrities standing against him. All of the systems that are supposed to make sure one side wins failed. He smashed a billion-dollar political machine to pieces.
Good. I'm glad we can have elections where the prize doesn't go to the side with the slickest ads, biggest names, and deepest pockets. So be it. Next time, that groundswell movement against the powers that be can be coming from your side. I personally believe it will, that this will be remembered as the dying last gasp of the worst part of America, one final stand against the bigotry and ignorance that has plagued us since the day we decided to build this nation on the backs of slaves.
But it won't happen on its own. Nothing good ever does. Some of you wake up every day feeling like you have no purpose in life, and motherfucker, have I got news for you! The future is waiting to see what we do next. Let's get to it.

Voting for Trump - You Don't Get It Do you?

A friend of mine posted this meme on facebook:

A back and forth response started with one friend telling the person who posted this: "Lmao. You just don't get it"

He wouldn't say what he meant, but he was obviously a Trump supporter.

I post things from time to time about this and other elections. This year I have tried to usually post articles with facts about one side or the other. That is something that has been sorely missing in this election - but also blatantly ignored. I could say it's a mystery, but it's not really such a mystery to me.

People are caught up by their emotions. Their emotions are being fanned by an entertainer who has been taught by professionals how to act on camera. That's not all Trump on his TV shows. He's an actor being directed how to look, act, respond and get reactions on camera as every TV actor told is by their Director.

He is also stirring up what many folks have kept silently hidden from the public and themselves. I bit of bigotry, small or big, but there non the less.

I know what it was like to live in the 50"s. I know how many of our elders spoke and thought about people not like themselves. It was as blatant in my family as my mother not trusting an Italian who was not from Naples!!! That's like not trusting a person because they are from Montana and not the state they are from! It didn't have to make sense, it was how they were brought up. And guess what, many of us were exposed to that!

Now some of that history and memories are coming out. It's fueled by the fire of speeches filled with promises but not filled with plans on how to accomplish those promises. It's like saying "I'm going to cure cancer if you elect me!" He has no frigging idea how to do that but if he says it, on TV, it must be right. Our elders thought if you read it in the newspapers, it must be right. Some people read it on the internet and think the same thing.

Take the emotion out of the elections to date and look at the facts in front of you. That's what I did when I read the response, "You don't get it." Guess I got emotional and here was my response:

"No YOU don't get it. We don't have to make America Great Again. It's already pretty darn awesome.
He wants to take us back 70 years where white men ruled, women were subservient, blacks were called the "N" word and ethnic jokes were just SO funny.
Those are FACTS posted here, not lies made up to make his supporters feel good.
I'm retired and have spent a lot of time watching all channels, reading articles and fact checking. Hillary may not be my 1st choice, but she is the most qualified candidate to continue to put us on a track of recovery.
Obama isn't to blame for all of the whining out there. He took over a stupendous mess that Bush got us into after taking over a country in great shape" Obama did his best "to continue to move forward.
Is everything perfect like Obamacare, no, but it can be fixed. Remember both Dems and Reps spent a lot of time mucking it up.
So if you want manufacturing jobs to come back to the USA and not keep them overseas where Trump makes all of his clothes, if you want to continue with the atmosphere of bigotry and hate that Trump has continued to poke like poking a bear with a stick, then God help us for your ignorance, bigotry and hatred of what is good and right".

Was I over the top with my response?  I don't think so. Was I a little overemotional? Probably. But then, why not? It seems that emotions may be what makes people vote during this election, not facts.

I just hope someone reads this or something else containing facts and finally "Gets it" and makes the right choice when they cast their vote.

Election Day Prognostications

As some you may have noticed, I occasionally make comments about politics, politicians and policies. This has been especially true during this election. As election day is nearly upon us, I would like to make some predictions. See if you agree. Comment with your own predictions so we can compare them on November 9th.

1. Hillary will win. She will end up with 345 electoral college votes, plus or minus 5%. Why so high compared to the current polls? There are a couple of things at play that are hard to measure. First is the ground game. Clinton has a high number of people going door to door, driving people to voting locations, and working the phones. Some experts feel this is worth 2-3% more than the polls show. Trump has virtually no ground game.

Second are the results from early voting. In many cases it shows an almost equal number of Democrats and Republicans have voted early. So most people assume that all people are voting for the Presidential candidate of their party. Not true, in my opinion. In this election there are more Republicans voting for Hillary than there are Democrats voting for Trump. Even if only 2% more of the Republicans vote for Hillary than there are Democrats voting for Trump, that converts to a 4% shift in the early voting results (2% taken from Trump and given to Hillary deflates his vote by 2 and adds 2 to her to give a total shift of 4%). Note that this unmeasured effect is only true for early voters where we don't know how they voted. On election day we will know how they voted. Since about 30% of eligible voters in early voting states have voted, the net effect in those states is about 1.2% (30% of voters times the 4% shift).

If you combined these two factors, you end up with a net gain to Clinton of 3-4%. This puts all of the battleground states out of reach for Trump and may even move a couple of Trump-leaning states to her too.

2. After the election, the Senate will be 51/49 in favor of the Democrats. Some of the math from above will work for the Democrats.

3. Trump will not concede the election Tuesday or Wednesday. He will claim voting irregularities. On election day we will see some voter intimidation at the polls but not as much as some predict. It will come mostly from the Trump side as he has encouraged people to monitor the polls but has not put any guidelines in place to control those who may be too enthusiastic about their duties.

4. Trump's failure to get elected will launch Trump's career in the anti-establishment alt-right movement which will crash and burn. Trump's brand, which he values at $5 billion dollars will take a big hit. The brand has been attached to Trump the winner. Now he will be Trump the loser no matter who he blames the loss on.

Disagree with my predictions? Offer your thoughts about what will happen on and after election day. Any logic you can use will be appreciated.
